9-1-1 Kids' Corner
9-1-1 callers range in all ages. Studies have found 91% of children are unfamiliar and unable to properly dial 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. This leads to children being unaware the importance of 9-1-1 and can lead to prank calls or accidental calls by children. Many do not realize disabled cell phone (those without a service plan) can still call 9-1-1, which leads to accidental calls by children playing on these phones. Below are resources for children to learn more about 9-1-1 and when to call.
Teach your kids their last name, their home address and phone number. This information is invaluable when it comes to an emergency and seconds make a difference. It is also important for your child to not be afraid to call 9-1-1 and discuss with them different situations that would constitute a valid emergency and a call to 9-1-1. They should know to always call 9-1-1 from a safe location and it is imperative they stay on the line with the dispatcher until the dispatcher tells them it is ok to disconnect the call.
