EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is responsible for coordinating responses to emergencies and disasters to protect lives, property and the environment. Its purpose includes:

Preparedness: Planning and training for potential emergencies, such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks or industrial accidents. This includes public education, emergency drills and creating emergency response plans.

  • Response: Mobilizing resources and coordinating with local, state and federal agencies during an emergency. The OEM ensures timely communication and development of personnel and supplies.

  • Recovery: Helping communities return to normal after a disaster. This includes assessing damage, restoring critical services and supporting individuals and businesses with recovery assistance.

  • Mitigation: Reducing the risk and impact of future disasters through hazard analysis, land-use planning and promoting safer construction and infrastructure practices.

  • Coordination: Serving as a central hub that brings together law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, public health agencies, utility companies and other partners during crises.

Tornado

Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes can destroy buildings, flip cars and create deadly flying debris. Tornadoes can happen anytime and anywhere and bring intense winds over 200 MPH.

Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning and heart attacks from overexertion. Winter storms including blizzards can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, ice and high winds.

Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two or three days. In extreme heat your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to death.

Extended power outages may impact the whole community and the economy. A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly, leading to disruption in utilities, causing businesses or services, including ATMs to temporarily close or deem medical devices inoperable.

Thunderstorms are common and can be dangerous. They can bring intense wind, flash flooding, hail and dangerous lightning. Know the risks of thunderstorms, have an emergency plan in mind and cut down or trim any trees that may endanger your home and buy surge protectors to better protect your home.

Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods are the most common disaster in the United States. Failing to evacuate flooded areas or entering flood waters can lead to injury or death.
